Hollywood 1930s Vintage
Hollywood glamour dominated the 1930s with liquid silk and satin bias cut gowns floating across the silver screen, women were much more feminine and shapes were softer and more genteel.
A French designer Madeleine Vionnet was the first to devise a methods of bias cross cutting during the 1920s and by the 1930s these flowing narrow fitting soft fluid dresses took over from the drop waist almost shapeless dress of the roaring 20s.
Two of the most influential designers of both the 1920 and 1930s were Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli, Coco was the first designer to design a range of clothing for petite women in 1937. Both these powerhouses in couture fashion were experimenting with new techniques and fabrics throughout this era with Elsa Schiaparelli in 1933 using a new fastener we call the zip.
Between the years 1927 - 1938 Dr. Wallace Carothers started and concluded his research into a new polymers and eventually discovered polyamide. In 1938 he founded the Du Pont company and the nylon stocking was born. Nylon stockings were one of the most important developments in women's fashion in the 1930s with Nylons being available in 15 Denier, and an absolute must for women during 2nd World War as they were a rare luxury.
Vintage Chanel and Schiaparelli are hard to come by from the 1930s but do occasionally come up for auction, the best garments to collect are the wonderful fluid bias cut vintage evening dresses, these are easier to obtain and sell for an array and can be picked up relatively cheaply for a starting price of around $50.
