Ceil Chapman Vintage
Ceil Chapman is one of the most celebrated American fashion designing garments in an almost architectural or engineering way constructed to the most precise measurements.
Ceil was born in Staten Island where she lived for the most part of her life. Married to Samuel her first husband they set up a business in the 1940s selling garments taking his surname for her designs. Her first designs came under the ‘A Chapman Original’ label.
Described to many as Marilyn Monroe’s favorite designer its not hard to imagine why she would of chosen at time Ceil Chapman designs. Most people do not mention that not only did she design one of Elizabeth Taylor wedding dresses but also dresses for Deborah Kerr.

Her designs are fantastic creations, wiggle dresses made to perfection draped shoulderless cocktail dresses or full skirted swing dresses made from delicious fabrics ornately decorated in sequins or beads. She was a stunning 1950 to early 1960s designer.
By the end of the 1960s her marriage to Samuel ended and she had married again to Tom Rogers but she remained a Chapman as her clientele list had grown under that name amongst the rich and famous movie starts of the 1950s.
Ceil designed for the movie industry and television she specialized in cocktail and beautiful formal evening wear. She loved to use silk, taffeta, jersey, chiffon, organdy, cotton and metallic brocades detailing them with beads and sequins or sequins.
Sadly Ceil Chapman died in the late 1970s and her vintage dresses are amongst the most sort after 1950s designers. Her dresses are some of the most expensive with dresses being auctioned sometimes running into $1000.
