Hattie Carnegie, born 15th March 1880 was born in Vienne, Austria named Henriette Kanengeister, from a large family of six children her father was said to be the one who introduced her to the fashion world.

Her father an Ausrian Jewish Artist and Tailor moved his family to the USA when Hattie was 6 years old. Carnegie was know not only for the first designed to introduce a 'ready to wear' range but also her amazing elegant couture collections.

As a designer she was is one of the most important in America fashion history.

Her Company pioneered ready to wear clothing with her 'head to hem' concept which Ralph Lauren used successfully in later years, discovering some of Americas best designers such as Pauline Trigère, Norman Norell and James Galanos.

Opening her first shop as a Milliner in New York called Carnegie Ladies Hatter and then soon after her first fashion store on Upper West Side and then a final shop in 1923 her famous store named Hattie Carnegie boutique at 42 East 49th street, New York, even though she had never sewn a dress in her life.

Her shops flirted with other designers of the era carrying Chanel, Vionnet and Dior alongside her own Couture collections. Not only these but also a ready to wear line, Costume Jewelry and Cosmetics items. It is said she even has a line in Chocolate!

Her flare for design made her collections sort after with clients like the legendary Joan Crawford and The Duchess of Windsor.

Even though the success of her important influences in the fashion industry in the forty's and fifties her proudest commission came in 1950 when she designed the Women's Army Corps (WAC) uniform. These uniforms were commissioned for use in January 1951 and on the 1st June 1952 she won the Congressional Medal of Freedom for the WAC uniforms and her work within the WAC. These designs were used until 1968 log after her death in 1956.
