Harlem, New York designer Nettie Rosenstein born Nettie Rosenscran in Salzburg, Austria in 1890. Her family emigrated to America soon after she was born where she lived and then married Saul Rosenstein in 1913.

Her husband already ran a fashion company selling underwear, this fueled her passion and she began making clothing from her home as a business.

Establishing her own business employing at least 50 workers in Manhattan in 1921, she began to wholesale her designs to Department Store I Magnin under the name Nettie Rosenstein Inc.

Her dresses were sold under the store to which she supplied names with no Rosenstein labels attached to the items clients were simply told it was a Rosenstein design.

From this her name as a designer grew and soon items were to carry her own label and were highly sort after. Nettie only allowed one store in each major city to stock her clothing and this unique incite into her business knowledge kept her designs one of the most popular in the late 1920s as the stores were flooded with French and European designs.

Trying out early retirement in 1927 she soon was drawn back to the bright lights of the design world and in 1931 she reopened on West 47th Street with her Sister in Law Eva.

Nettie one of Americas top designers, was highlighted in 1937 in Life Magazine describing her as one of the most highly regarded American designers. In the next few years she won the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award and sold out in over 92 shops across the USA.

Her designed influenced a wide range of designers from this era although her dresses were seldom bought by the average women copies of her designs were sold throughout her career with her accreditation of the "little black dress". Costume Jewelry also was an area she is know for as her designs were stunning and highly collectible.

In 1942 inspiring a tribute from Time Magazine she again tried out retirement but again just a few years later she resumed her designs involving herself in the design of First Lady Mamie Eisenhower dress for the 1953 Inauguration Ball.

Aged 90 in 1980 Nettie sadly died leaving her name as a tribute to fine America design from the 1920s through to the 1970s.

This Jewish/American designer Nettie Rosenstein famed for her little black dress and stunning costume jewelry is certainly one of the most collected names in vintage clothing.
