Victorian Vintage Clothing
Victorian fashion dates from 1840s and was developed in England during the reign of Queen Victoria, this style of dress follows trends with women wearing low pointed waist line floor length dresses, with skirts bell shaped. Underneath ladies worn Corsets, knee length cotton and lace chemise worn with lots of flounce and lace petticoats.
Moving into the 1850s petticoats were reduced and crinoline dresses were much larger and more elaborate. These classic Victorian shaped evening dresses had low necklines and generally they were worn off your shoulders and embellished with lace, long opera gloves and beautiful delicate shawls made in lace and crochet to complement these garments.
By 1860 the bustle became evident and dresses had flatter designed fronts with lace fingerless gloves complementing the short sleeves rather than off the shoulder look.
Tea Gowns soon became popular with uncorseted bodices moving through the 1870s and into the 1880s, popular items from this era were ladies ridding clothes with veiled Top hats and ankle length draped skirts worn with boots or gaiters. Coats were loose, floor length garments with beautiful bonnets embellished with lace and designed in fabric.
As the era drew to a close women needed better movement and clothes that did not restrict them as much, simple dresses were needed and both crinolines and bustles were slowly becoming less fashionable. Corsets were still a must but much less restrictive and longer. Skirts moved to a trumpet shaping, fitting very closely over the hip and complimenting the wasp waist cut waist and skirts which flared just above the knee.
These are the general shapes engaged by Victorian designers, other items included sports wear as women needed clothes for tennis and cycling and other activities.
